Top 10 tips to save money on Gas

Gas prices keep going up, and our wallets keep getting thinner. Below are the top 10 ways to save money:

GasFill the car early in the morning: Only buy or fill up your car in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all gas stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the fuel, when it gets warmer gas expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening….your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

Fill slowly: When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less worth for your money.

Fill only half your tank: One of the most important tips is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gas evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Do not fill if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy,.Most likely the gas is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Get a better air filter: More efficient brands of air filters cost a little more but will pay for themselves in most vehicles in fuel savings.

Fill your gas at Costco: On an average you save 15 cents a gallon when you fill at Costco. If you fill 25 gallons a month, that is a saving of 3.75 dollars every month. Multiplying that with 12 will save you 45 dollars a year to make your membership free. You can make use of this free membership to buy other products at lower prices from Costco.

Give your car a tune up. While properly maintaining your car won’t actually save you money at the pump, it will save you gas. Using less gas saves you money. Have the oil changed, and have a certified mechanic give your engine a look over.

Clean out any unnecessary items in your car. If you have heavy objects in your car that you don’t need, remove them. If your car is lighter, it will use less fuel to get where you’re going.

Be smart with the air conditioning. On the highway, closed windows decrease air resistance, so run the air conditioner. But in stop-and-go traffic, shutting off the air conditioning and opening the windows can lighten your fuel use. Air conditioning can lower your fuel economy by 10 percent to 20 percent.

Buy the lowest grade of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Check your owner’s manual for this information. As long as your engine doesn’t knock or ping, the fuel you’re using is fine. You can save hundreds of dollars a year.

Hope these tips were helpful. Please share if you know of more tips.

 Tips from Users

  • You will usually get better gas milage from the higher octane gas, so it is worth it to track your milage from tank to tank and try a few tanks of high octane to see if the savings in efficiency make up for the higher price. Also, fill you tires the correct pressure (generally about max pressure - 10%). This will help a lot.
  • You can also increase your mileage with adding the right amounts of pure Acetone when you fill up. If the amount you save on gas outweighs the cost of acetone then it might just be worth the hassel.
